Adventures in Western NC November 10 2013, 0 Comments

A favorite adventure, a day hike in the Smokies.

Living three hours east of the Appalachian mountains makes road tripping west the perfect weekend adventure.  The peak of the fall color in Western North Carolina is generally within the first few weeks of October, but was about two weeks late this year, making my November 1st trip more lovely than expected. With suggestions from friends who live in the area, we explored four trails from Montreat, NC to the Pisgah National Forest. This was the first experience taking Eddie, my rescued mutt, on a hike with any elevation.  On the winding, switch-back drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway, he seemed a little lethargic, but as soon as the crisp mountain air hit his black dot of a nose, he was overtaken by his natural instinct to roam and wander. Exploring the dark forests, treeless mountain balds, streamside meadows, and cascading waterfalls was a treat.
